Nintendo Direct Highlights

Spoiler alert: Nintendo's update for the coming year didn't include a few key (and expected, and hoped for...) announcements.

No news about Breath of the Wild 2 and nothing about a new, more powerful, Switch console. Entirely possible that BOTW may be a console release and one, or the other, isn't ready but...

Enough about what they didn't release, here's a selection of what they did:

Super Smash Bros. gets a new character update with Pyra/Mythra joining up. She's a dual character from Xenoblade Chronibles; her full moveset hasn't yet been revealed, but from the gameplay footage, it appears that this 2 in 1 character has different moves depending on which skin she uses, and she can freely swap between skins. This new character launches in March.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, the popular party game for PS4 and Windows, is dropping on Switch (and Xbox, but this is a Nintendo update sooo...). Not much to say here except Fall Guys seems a natural fit on the Switch, so it should receive a good reception.

Monster Hunter: Rise drops on Switch in March and looks to offer more of the Monster-busting action the series is known for. Featuring a vast array of characters, and unique monsters, Monster Hunter: Rise should satisfy.

Mario Golf: Super Rush, the latest installment in the Mario golf series, hits stores in June. All your favourites are here: Yoshi, Bowser, Mario and more. Golf through lush terrain and make consequential choices about your game, manage the wind, your clubs and more. Motion control enabled, with new modes including speed golf, and story mode, Super Rush looks like a ton of fun. Fore!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons gets Marioed! With Super Mario 35th anniversary themed items coming soon to your island. Mario and Luigi outfits, the super mushroom, and the question block can soon be ordered in game as furniture items. You can even place two warp pipes and use them to travel between locations on your island. Want! This free update launches on February 25th. Your Super Mario themed items will be available via the Nook shop on March 1st.

Star Wars: Hunters is a new Star Wars game coming to the Switch by Zynga (yeah, they made Farmville...). They show Jedi, Stormtroopers, Bounty Hunters, and Wookiees...no idea what the game will be about, but in the words of Rick (from Rick and Morty) "you sunuva'bitch, I'm in." This is (so far as I know) the first game outside of the EA exclusive Star Wars license that has any real content behind it.

Hunters will be available some time this year.

Hades the uber-popular dungeon-crawler is getting a Switch release. You'll even get a PC download code for the soundtrack and a 32 page full colour compendium if you buy the physical game. On March 19th, see you in Hell!

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is getting an expansion pass! Here's what you get:

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (HD): It isn't Breath of the Wild 2, but it's something. A remastered version of the Wii classic Skyward Sword is coming to Switch in July!
